My grandmother didn't know much about cooking (she had a cook) but when it came to home remedies, she was an expert. If my chest felt stuffed or my nostrils were clogged, she'd take a pot, put a couple of drops of eucalyptus and peppermint oil in it, fill it halfway with water, cover it and bring it to a boil. Then she'd take it off the stove and have me sit under a towel draped over my head above the pot so the steaming mixture could penetrate my lungs. It worked every time, and it still does. In these terrifying days of COVID-19, it's more important to me than ever to make sure my lungs are clear. My pot, peppermint and eucalyptus oil and a folded towel sit on the kitchen counter, waiting to be called to action.
